Summer Learning Opportunities – Eligibility & Enrollment
We know many families look forward to summer learning opportunities, and we want to provide clarity on what is available this year. Ventura Unified School District (VUSD) is offering summer programs for students who have just completed grades TK-5 only if they scored below grade level on their Trimester 2 MAP Growth assessment (January) or qualify as low-income, homeless, or foster youth. For the remainder of this message, we will be referring to students’ grade levels that they will be entering in the fall. So, a current 5th grader is considered a 6th grade student in summer school.
While we understand that many families may be interested, we are unable to offer summer school for elementary school students who do not meet the criteria above. Unfortunately, we will not have summer programs available for students who will be going into grades 7 or 8. Students entering high school will have the opportunity to take Health and College & Career Seminar (CCS). We will continue to provide Extended School Year (ESY) for students in all grade levels with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that includes ESY services.
Eligibility Criteria
Summer school enrollment is based on the following criteria:
Elementary (K-6): Only students who scored below grade level on their Trimester 2 MAP Growth assessment (January) or those identified as low-income, homeless, or foster youth are eligible.Students will attend an elementary school based on their school during the normal school year:
- Will Rogers will be the summer school for students who attend EP Foster, Lemon Grove, Lincoln, Montalvo, Pierpont, Sheridan Way, Sunset, or Will Rogers.
- Juanamaria will be the summer school for students who attend ATLAS, Citrus Glen, Elmhurst, Juanamaria, Junipero Serra, Loma Vista, Mound, Poinsettia, or Portola.
- Lemon Grove will be the site for Elementary ESY.
- Balboa will be the site for 5th to 6th grade Bridge Program
- Balboa will also be the site for Middle School ESY
High School (9-12):
- 8th to 9th grade transition: All incoming 8th graders may enroll in Health and College & Career Seminar (both courses are required).
- Grades 10-12: Only students needing credit recovery are eligible. Those who wish to accelerate should enroll in Dual Enrollment courses at a community college.
If you register your child and receive an email stating they are not eligible, it means they did not meet the above criteria.
Why “Learn4Life”?
VUSD partners with Learn4Life to provide summer school. This partnership allows us to offer summer programs without using additional district funding. Learn4Life includes Vista Real Charter School (9-12) and Antelope Valley Learning Academy (K-8), which hire VUSD teachers and staff. Because charter schools can receive state funding for summer attendance while traditional public schools cannot, this partnership benefits our students and district.
To participate, families must complete an online Master Agreement form, which will be available in April. We appreciate your cooperation in completing this required document.
Additional Summer Programs: TWI and ELOP
All of the above relate to “summer school,” which refers to the academic program every morning that is focused on English Language Arts and Mathematics. There will also be a Two Way Immersion (TWI) summer school at Will Rogers for students who attend TWI at Montalvo, Sheridan Way, or Will Rogers during the regular year that will include grade-level instruction in Spanish.
Additionally, the summer school offerings at Juanamaria and Will Rogers as well as the 5th to 6th grade bridge at Balboa will have an Expanded Learning Opportunity Program (ELOP) available until 6:00 pm every day. Students who attend summer school are welcome to participate in Expanded Learning every afternoon.
