Intradistrict Transfers

Intradistrict transfers are required when a student who resides within Ventura Unified School District boundaries wishes to attend a school other than their home school of residence.

Elementary School Grades TK-5 Intradistrict Transfers

2026-27 School Year:  The window opens January 6, 2026.  The process begins at your boundary school.  Applications are available at your boundary school and are also linked below.  Applications are to be submitted to your boundary school then sent to the requested school for their review for space availability.

Secondary Schools Grades 6-12 Intradistrict Transfers 

2026-27 School Year:  Student Support Services will begin accepting these transfers as of  January 7, 2026.  Applications are available at your boundary school and are also linked below.  Applications are to be submitted to Rosaura Perez in Student Support Services at the district office (255 W Stanley Avenue, Ventura) and are processed in the order they are received and approved as space allows. 

NOTE:   Schools of Choice lottery lists take precedence over transfer requests received thereafter.

Terms & Conditions:

• Permits are valid for grade span (TK-5, 6-8, 9-12), but will be reviewed annually. 
• Approval is subject to space availability.
• Permit may be revoked for unsatisfactory attendance, academic performance, and/or behavior.
• Transportation is not provided.
• Student athletes transferring from one high school to another without a bona fide change of address may be restricted from varsity level competition in the same sport that they competed in their previous school for a period of one calendar year.  (C.I.F. Rule 214)
• If the student is no longer enrolled in the specific program, the transfer request will be revoked.

Interdistrict Transfers

Interdistrict transfers are required when either a student who lives outside of the boundaries of Ventura Unified School District wants to attend a VUSD school or when a student who resides in the VUSD boundaries wishes to attend school in another district.  In either case, both school districts must approve the transfer.  (CA Ed Code §46600.2,  Board Policy 5117 and Admin. Reg. 5117)

• Applications received before the 1st day of the school year, will be notified as soon as possible, but up to 14 calendar days after the new term begins.
• Applications received after the first day the school year begins, will be notified within 30 days from the date the application was received.

Ventura County Office of Education - Interdistrict Transfer Agreement

Incoming transfers for the school year 2026-27 will be accepted beginning January 20, 2026, on a first-come-first-serve basis.  Transfers must have your home district's release-signature and all required documentation attached.  Please submit your requests to  Rosaura Perez in Student Support Services.

Required documentation for all new students to VUSD: 

• Student's report card or transcript 
• If applicable - special education students, their most recent IEP (Individual Evaluation Program)
• If parent/guardian marks employment as a reason for transfer - proof of employment within Ventura
• Health & Safety - parent/guardian's letter sharing concerns, police report or court documents
• Other - parent/guardian's letter sharing reason(s) for a transfer request

Abandonment of Request by Parent/Guardian:

• Failure of the parent/guardian to meet required timelines, including submission of supporting documents, will be deemed an abandonment of the Interdistrict Transfer request

• NO APPEAL - an abandoned request is not eligible for appeal to the county office of education as it is based on the parent/guardians's failure to meet requirement(s)

For Transfers within Ventura County

TERMS & CONDITIONS AS OF JUNE 2026

Ventura County school districts understand and agree that a pupil who is granted an interdistrict transfer to another district shall be subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the Interdistrict Transfer Agreement and may have the transfer revoked during the school year, or non-renewed, for the following school year, based on any of the reasons set forth below. Failure to meet enrollment or submition of supporting document timelines will be deemed an abandonment of the request. Revocations of an interdistrict transfer by the district of attendance may not be appealed to the County Board of Education.  

Permits may be revoked at any time by the district of attendance for the following reasons:

• Student is excessively tardy or absent from school, or student is brought to school excessively early or picked up excessively late.
• Student fails to uphold appropriate behavior standards.
• Student fails to make appropriate academic efforts.
• False or misleading information was provided on the Interdistrict Transfer Agreement and/or accompanying documentation.
• Other conditions that occur that would render continuance inadviseable.  

• Once an interdistrict permit has been granted, a student is not required to reapply for a permit for the duration of attendance at a school site unless an agreement between the governing boards of the district of residence and the district of attendance states otherwise.
• Students entering grades 11 and 12 shall not have their permits rescinded by either district.
• Approval is subject to space availability in the district and may not be at the site requested.
• If the student participates in any athletic program governed by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), they may not be eligibile to participate at the new school. Parent/guardian should check the CIF rules before submitting this transfer application.
• No financial obligation shall be incurred by the district of residence for services rendered under this agreement.
• The parent/guardian is responsible for providing transportation to and from school.

Should your interdistrict transfer be denied, you have the right to appeal this decision within 30 calendar days to the Ventura County Office of Education-Interdistrict Appeals office.
