The San Buenaventura Conservancy (SBC) recently nominated the former Washington School Site to the National Register of Historic Places. On July 12, 2024, Ventura Unified School District (VUSD) staff met with several San Buenaventura Conservancy (SBC) board members to share the District’s preliminary analyses of the SBC nomination scheduled for review by the State Historical Resources Commission on August 2, 2024.
The District is committed to ensuring that properties nominated to the National Register of Historic Places meet the objective evaluation criteria detailed in the National Register Bulletin and presented its comprehensive analysis to the State Historical Resources Commission on Aug. 2, 2024. The Commission postponed its consideration until its regularly scheduled Commission meeting in October. Please see the links below to review what was submitted to the Commission.
Comments to State Historical Resources Commission
Regarding surplus property utilization, the VUSD Board of Education has not yet determined how surplus properties will ultimately be utilized, including consideration of Educator Workforce Housing, and held a Special Board Meeting on July 9th to elicit public feedback and discussion.
We recommend that anyone in the community who would like to continue to be informed of discussions/determinations that the Board may have on this topic attend regular and special board meetings. Agendas are posted a minimum of 72 hours before a regular board meeting and 24 hours before a special board meeting on our Board Meeting Agenda and Minutes webpage. Our regular board meetings are streamed live and recorded and can be found on our VUSD YouTube page.
