School Closures Advisory Committee
School Closures Advisory Committee: Overview and Introduction
The Ventura Unified School District Board of Education has directed staff to develop a clear, data-based process to help determine whether any school should be considered for closure. As part of this work, VUSD is forming a School Closures Advisory Committee to study enrollment trends, review criteria, analyze data, and ultimately make a recommendation to the Board of Education regarding which schools, if any, should be considered for closure.
We recommend you watch a presentation given to the VUSD Board of Education in December 2025 that explains the process, https://buff.ly/r6v43oY.
The committee is expected to begin meeting in March 2026, meet monthly, and provide its recommendation to the Board by October 2026. If the Board ultimately approves any closures, no school would close before the 2027–2028 school year.
For several years, VUSD delayed discussions about school closures while monitoring enrollment trends, hoping post-COVID declines might stabilize. However, with new enrollments continuing to drop by approximately 300 students per year, it is time to carefully assess our current and projected student population and determine whether the number of active school sites should be adjusted. This work will be open, transparent, data-driven, and aligned with our district values. Please review our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for more information.
There will be meaningful opportunities for staff, students, families, and community members to share feedback throughout this effort. Your questions, ideas, and concerns will play an essential role as the committee and Board engage in this important work.
We are currently building the processes and protocols that will guide this effort. In the meantime, we encourage you to stay connected by visiting this website for updates, reviewing committee agendas (below), following Board of Education updates, and tuning into regular Board meetings or attending in-person whenever possible. If you encounter information online that does not come directly from the District, or if you have questions about the process, please reach out to us at VUSDSchoolsCommittee@venturausd.org.
Thank you for your partnership and engagement as we begin this thoughtful, community-centered process.
