Principal’s Message
Welcome to Will Rogers Elementary School, the Home of the Broncos. Our goal at Will Rogers Elementary School is to provide a high quality-learning environment that is guided by the Ventura Unified School District’s Vision and Mission.

In the Ventura Unified School District all Students will receive an exemplary and balanced education fostering a life-long passion for learning and engagement. We demand excellence of ourselves because our supportive community has entrusted us with their children.
Visitors / Parent Involvement
Parent involvement in a child’s education may be more important to student success than family income or education. We want you involved in our school so you can be the difference for your child. Visitors and Volunteers are always welcome at Will Rogers School. All Visitors and Volunteers must sign in and pick up a visitor’s badge at the front office before coming on campus. We believe that parents and the school must work as a team to ensure the child’s academic success.
Parents are encouraged to:
- Support your child’s education
- Read and Review all paperwork that is sent home from the school
- Encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes per day
- Review/check the completion of all class and homework assignments
- Monitor and limit the television/video games viewed by your child
- Communicate with the teacher on a regular basis.
- Report any concerns to the teacher and/or Principal
- Facilitate discussion and show an interest in what your child is learning
- Attend Open House, Parent Conferences, and Assemblies
- Volunteer as a Classroom Helper
- Join our Parent/Teacher Association (PTA)-2nd Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m.
- Attend the Principal Coffee hour from 8:15-9:30 on the 3rd Friday of each month. (This is an informal forum to share ideas, make suggestions and learn more about our incredible school—everyone is welcomed!)
- Join/Attend School Site Council meetings (SSC)-2nd Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
- Join/Attend English Learner Advisory Committee Meetings (ELAC)-3rd Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
- Volunteer to join the Ventura Unified District Committees: Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC), Gifted and Talented Advisory Committee (GATE)-Meetings are held at the Education Services Center on Stanley Ave.
- Attend School Board Meetings (City Hall, 2nd/4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm)
Attendance
Students are required by law to attend school punctually and regularly.
Returning to School after an Absence
- Call the school office at 805-641-5496 ext. 2 each day that your child is absent and leave the following information:
- Your name/relationship to the student
- The student’s name and Room number/Teacher name
- The day(s) the student is or was absent
- The reason for the child’s absence
- Send a note signed by the parent or guardian with the above-mentioned information the day of return to school.
School Hours
Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays
- Kindergarten………..7:55 a.m. -1:15 p.m.
- Grades 1,2,3………...7:55 a.m. -2:15 p.m.
- Grades 4,5…………..7:55 a.m. -2:20 p.m.
EVERY WEDNESDAY IS EARLY DISMISSAL
- Kindergarten………….7:55 a.m. -11:55 a.m.
- Grades 1,2,3…………..7:55 a.m. -12:55 p.m.
- Grades 4,5…………….7:55 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Protected Instructional Time
To ensure an optimal learning environment, classroom interruptions are not allowed between 8:00-11:00 a.m.
Dropping off / Picking up / Parking
Please drive with caution at all times to ensure student safety. Parking is not allowed in the Turn Out area directly in front of the school office. The Turn Out area is ONLY for picking up and dropping off students. Please use the Will Rogers parking lot when parking your car.
Playground / Cafeteria
The playground opens with adult supervision at 7:45 a.m. Any students arriving before 7:45 are to report to the cafeteria. Breakfast is served from 7:20-7:55 a.m. daily. Breakfast and lunch are provided at no cost to students. All food must be eaten in the designated eating areas. No food is allowed to be taken off campus. Students are required to follow the cafeteria rules at all times.
Dress Code
All clothing is expected to be clean, appropriate and conducive to all school activities including Physical Education.
SHOES:
- NO flip flops, heelies, or open-toed shoes
- ALL shoes require a heel strap
CLOTHING:
- All tops require minimum 2” wide shoulder straps
- No Halter tops, tube tops, crop tops, A-Tees
- No profanity/ inappropriate slogans/representations
BOTTOMS:
- No sagging pants. Pants must be able to remain above hip without belt.
- All bottoms must reach mid-thigh
HAIR:
- No unnatural hair color or styles (i.e. pink hair, mohawks, shaved hair designs)
- Hats are NOT to be worn inside buildings
- Undergarments must be covered at all times.
- Only ear piercings are allowed
The Principal and/or staff will determine if a students dress is disruptive to the learning environment.
Gum / Candy / Toys / Electronics
- No gum
- No Hot Cheetos
- No soda
- Prescription sunglasses only
- No excessive amounts of candy
- No toys from home without teacher permission
- No trading cards
- No electronic devices (i.e. i-Pod, Gameboys, Tamagotchi’s, DS, laser pens, cameras)
- Cell phones must be turned off during school hours
- NO BALLOONS of any kind are allowed at Will Rogers
- Will Rogers assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen items
Medication
Any medications that must be taken during school hours require a completed Medication at School form. All medications must be prescribed, including over the counter medications. Medication at School forms are available in the Health Office. The form must be completed by a parent/guardian and a physician. Medications must be brought in by a parent/guardian at the elementary level. Sunscreen and Chap Stick do not require a form.
Bicycles / Skateboards / Scooters
- Bicycles, skateboards, and scooters are NEVER to be ridden on school grounds.
- Bicycles must be parked in the bike rack.
- Skateboards and scooters must be stored inside the classroom or the Principal’s office
- Please Wear a Helmet. It’s the Law!
Conduct / Citizenship
Will Rogers School is committed to sustaining a safe, orderly and respectful school culture. Our school Discipline Policy ensures that every student is able to focus on their learning and achieve optimal academic success.
PROCEDURES/RULES:
- Obey all staff members
- Exhibit self-control at all times: NO Physical contact/violence/profanity/racism
- Walk at all times, Running is permitted ONLY on the big grassy field
- Respect all members of the school community
- Respect school property and the property of others
- Freeze when the school bell rings
- Students must be issued a pass to visit the front office, the health office, the counselor’s office, or the library during recess and lunch.
Good conduct is encouraged and rewarded at Will Rogers School.
Positive incentives include:
- Weekly Blue Ticket raffles
- Monthly Student, Reader, Author of the Month Assemblies
- Principal’s Recess
- Pizza parties
- Trimester awards
- Perfect attendance incentives
Discipline consequences
- Loss of recess privileges
- Parent conference with teacher and/or principal
- Suspension from school
SUSPENSION FROM SCHOOL
Students may be suspended for the following reasons pursuant to Education Code 48900, 48900.2, 48900.3, 48900.4, 48900.5, 48900.7,
- Caused, attempted to cause, or threatened to cause physical injury to another person.
- Willfully used force or violence upon the person of another, except in self-defense.
- Possessed, sold, or furnished any firearm, knife, dangerous object, or explosive.
- Possessed, used, sold, furnished, or under the influence of any controlled substance, alcohol, or intoxicant of any kind.
- Offered, arranged, or negotiated to sell any controlled substance, alcohol, intoxicant, or representation of items thereof.
- Committed or attempted to commit robbery or extortion
- Caused or attempted to cause damage to school or private property.
- Stole or attempted to steal school or private property.
- Possessed or used tobacco, or tobacco products.
- Committed an obscene act or engaged in profanity or vulgarity.
- Offered, possessed, arranged, or negotiated to sell any drug paraphernalia.
- Disrupted school activities or willfully defied valid authority.
- Knowingly received stolen school property or private property.
- Possessed an imitation firearm.
- Committed or attempted to commit a sexual assault, or committed a sexual battery, as defined in the penal code.
- Harassed, threatened, or intimidated a pupil who is a complaining witness or witness in a school disciplinary proceeding.
- Unlawfully offered, arranged to sell, negotiated to sell, or sold the prescription drug Soma.
- Engaged in, or attempted to engage in, hazing as defined in Section 245.6 of the Penal Code.
- Aided or abetted the infliction or attempted infliction of physical injury.
- Pupil’s presence causes a danger to persons or property, or threatens to disrupt the instructional process.
- Pupil has made terrorist threats against school officials or school property, or both
The following three violations apply to pupils in grades 4-12:
- Committed sexual harassment as defined in section 212.5 of the California Education Code.
- Caused, attempted to cause, threatened to cause, or participated in an act of hate violence.
- Engaged in harassment, threats, or intimidation against school district personnel or pupils.
