Training
The Ventura Unified School District Transportation Services Department conducts School Bus Driver's training sessions approximately two times each year. Successful graduates are prepared for testing by the California Highway Patrol to qualify for their Special Certificate for School Bus Drivers.
Once a convening date is established, all applicants will be scheduled for an informational orientation at the District Transportation Office at 255 West Stanley Avenue, Suite 100. Approximately two - three weeks of classroom training will be followed by approximately two - three weeks of behind-the-wheel training. Classroom training and behind-the-wheel training will be conducted mainly during the normal workday. Employment as an on-call school bus driver would follow certification as a school bus driver from the California Highway Patrol and if the district has any open positions.
Minimum Requirements:
Must have a driving record sufficient for insurability.
No DUI for at least 3 years.
No drug conviction or no-contest plea (7 years-- or up to the DMV).
A conviction or no-contest plea on a felony charge.
Must pass a drug and alcohol test.

CHP will investigate backgrounds of all applicants. Any applicant that has lived out of California during the last 7 years will have a FBI check.

Fees:
$35.00 per hour for Classroom & Behind the Wheel Instruction (Training is free for those seeking employment as a school bus driver or sub/on  call driver for the Ventura U.S.D.)
$64.00 Paid to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a Commercial License
$10.00 Paid to the Ventura County Sheriff for fingerprinting.
$57.00 Paid to the California Highway Patrol (Special School Bus Certificate Application)
$7.00 First Aid Certification (5 hours of classroom training @ $35.00 per hour.)
$5.00 Paid to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a 10 year(H6) driving record.
