About the Open Classroom
Middle School
Our small and intimate middle school is a part of a larger K-8 Open Classroom program, located on the Blanche Reynolds campus. We have been offering classes at the 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels since 2005, and provide hands-on and project based curriculum that is tailored to students’ interests, abilities and learning styles. With two middle school classrooms, teachers have the opportunity to team teach, providing core and elective material to a small student body. We also embrace the vital role current technologies have in the classroom for learning vital skills of research, project development and presentations.
Open Classroom is a student-parent-teacher cooperative. This interaction and connection encourages families to be an integral part of each student’s education. Parents are required to participate in the classrooms as volunteers, which allows for small group instruction and curriculum enrichment. Middle school students benefit from student to teacher/volunteer ratios of 5:1. Teaching core material in such small group sizes ensures student proficiency and informed quality instruction.
However, what makes Open Classroom Middle School such a unique learning experience is our focus on the social and emotional growth of students. During this crucial time of developmental growth and peer influence, our program strives to create an environment of safety and personal responsibility.
By honoring these changes, middle school students learn how to interact in healthy and positive ways, while feeling comfortable to “try out” this new person that they are becoming. Open Classroom Middle School students graduate as well rounded leaders with academic and social confidence. They leave our program empowered with the knowledge of their own learning styles, with a deep understanding of empathy and compassion, and as masters of cooperative learning experiences.
