WHAT IS HOMESTEAD? Homestead School was established in 1994 by the Ventura Unified School District as an alternative to regular classroom instruction for children in grades K-8. Fully credentialed teachers are available at no charge to assist parents who want to supervise their child's education at home.
Homestead School is an exciting alternative to a traditional classroom education. Homestead was designed to be a helpful resource for families who wish to develop and deliver their child's education at home. Every family is matched up with a fully credentialed teacher. The staff of teachers chose to be a part of Homestead because of their strong background and beliefs in alternative education. Parents and students in grades K-8 meet weekly with their teachers to support the student's individual learning goals. A more flexible schedule of appointments can be arranged after the initial orientation to the program. All materials and books are checked out to families for free and parents are encouraged to use other materials they feel will meet the needs of their child. The teachers at Homestead will help with detailed lesson planning if the family would like, or for the experienced home schooling family, serve as a partner teacher who works on setting goals and pulling together upcoming units of study. Families turn in samples of their work to their teacher and check out any materials they may need in all subjects grades K-8.
Homestead School can open many new learning opportunities and be enriching to the entire family. We want Homestead School to be a helpful resource as you develop and deliver your child's educational program. Although the extra commitment of time and energy is necessary for success in home schooling, you will find the results extremely rewarding.

CURRICULUM. Curriculum is defined as a "body of knowledge and skills," not necessarily any particular set of materials. Therefore, you are free to choose from a wide variety of options where books and materials are concerned, so long as they teach the "body of skills and knowledge" required by the Ventura Unified school District and are approved by your Resource Teacher. While the grade level guidelines are available, we hope to accommodate each student's interest, learning styles, abilities and goals.
Families and students are encouraged to choose materials from the Homestead library and attend field trips and other optional programs or classes. Opportunity is available to attend school assemblies presenting visual and performing arts programs.
Homestead school supports and encourages experiential learning. Through the program families are given opportunities to come together and network with other families who have also chosen to pursue educating at home. Voluntary field trips are planned based on student interests. There are also opportunities for group instruction. If a group of students express a need for instruction in math, Homestead teachers will hold classroom math tutorials. Student interests have spurred classes such as art, guitar, creative writing and hands on science labs. If families express a need, the Homestead staff does their best to find a way to meet it. Homestead school is an exciting home schooling option!
