Healthy Schools Project
The Healthy Schools Project provides learning opportunities for students to make healthy choices through a variety of hands-on experiences. Classroom lessons are standards-based and include label reading, making good food choices, and cooking. Students learn to recognize the link between food production and consumption by participating in school gardening activities. Exploring nature and gaining real world learning in math and science are two additional and important components of school gardens:
The Harvest of the Month program features a different fruit or vegetable each month. Classroom teachers offer samples of the produce and give information on the crop. Special salads showcasing the Harvest of the Month produce are served each week on the school salad bar to extend the classroom lessons. Each month, school libraries feature a storybook for the month's HOM fruit or vegetable. All our cafeterias offer a daily Farm to School salad bar with a variety of fresh, seasonal produce purchased from local farmers to the extent possible. Area farmers visit schools to do Farmer in the Classroom lessons and provide mini farmers' markets to students. Regular physical activity is promoted through the SPARK (Sports, Play & Active Recreation for Kids!) program. The Healthy Schools Project models healthy behaviors by recommending and giving ideas for healthy class parties and non-food fund raisers. Website links have information on these topics. Secondary schools extend the knowledge gained from the elementary and middle school experiences. Nutrition lessons are available through a variety of classes including health and science. Vending machines sell healthy choices and non-food fund raising is encouraged. These students also have access to a daily salad bar with seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables.
