MATH CONTEST
Last Saturday, the following students represented Cabrillo in the annual St. Bonaventure 7th/8th Grade Math Contest: Daniel Aranda, Jocelyn Carroll, Joseph Danker, James Florez, Kanan Luce, MacKenzie Pearce, Sarah Pelham, Mario Solis, Tavish Towner, and Brycen Ulrich. Several middle schools throughout the county took part in the individual and team competitions. Joseph Danker (8th grade) won 1st place in the individual competition while James Florez (7th grade) placed 5th. The following is a question from the exam: Approximately how many degrees does the moon revolve around the earth in one hour? Assume one revolution of the moon takes 27.30 days. a) 1/3° b) 0.55° c) 1.8° d) 6.59° e) 19.8° (Mrs. Canon-Mensendiek)
WAY TO GO!
Congratulations go to 8th grader Sasha Shapiro for being named the Student of the Month by the East Ventura Optimist Club. Sasha received a plaque and a $50 gift card to Barnes & Noble. The club members were so impressed by Sasha's truly remarkable character that they have decided to donate a generous check to Cabrillo's Haiti Relief Fund. It was Sasha's idea to start a relief effort here at Cabrillo during a School Site Council meeting. Way to go, Sasha! And thank you for making a difference. (Mrs. Pekar)
Music Department News
The Cabrillo Music Department is pleased to announce that Bailey Frost (Flute), Emma Vielbig (Flute), Amanda Johnson (Oboe), Desirae Thomaier (Clarinet) Megan Carey (Clarinet), Taylor Fountain (Clarinet), Andrew Huang (Clarinet) Joe Nguyen (Trombone) from Cabrillo Middle School have been selected by audition to be a participant in the 2010 Ventura County Middle School Honor Band. There were approximately 200 students from schools throughout the county that auditioned and the best students were selected. The Honor Band Concert will be held at the Buena High School Auditorium on Friday, February 26, 2010, at 7:00 pm.

The California Band Directors Association has announced that Amanda Johnson from Cabrillo Middle School has been selected through audition to be a participant in the 2010 CALIFORNIA ALL-STATE HONOR BANDS. The All-State Bands are held in conjunction with the placeStateCalifornia
Band Directors Association annual convention in Fresno, StateCalifornia on February 18 - 21, 2010. There were approximately 1,500 students from schools throughout the state that auditioned for
the 2010 All-State Bands and the best students were selected. (Mr. Boccali)
AMERICAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION
Congratulations to twenty outstanding Cabrillo math students who participated in the American Mathematics Competition. Because of their high scores, Cabrillo was named a National School of Merit. Joseph Danker got a perfect score, placing him in the top 1% of contestants nation-wide. Dylan Hart, Megan Carey, Matthew Goodkin-Gold, Nick Schwartz, Glenda Marshall, and Brycen Ulrich earned special honors also. Other members of Cabrillo's high performance team are Jack Peterson, Domenica Stoll, Paige Wagar, Emma Ginchereau, Charlotte Fox, Kendall Slaught, Brice Winans, Mattie Peters, Cesar Camacho, Sasha Shapiro, Julia Small, Audrey Franada, and Tommy Grossman. SPELLING BEE RESULTS
Sasha Shapiro is our school spelling bee champ-congratulations! Our runner up was Jimmy Becker. Twenty eight students competed on Wednesday and lasted two hours. Sasha's winning word was “adjudicate.” She will represent our school in February in the district spelling bee. (Mrs. Hofflund)
GOAT PROJECT
Thank you to all the wonderful Cabrillo students and staff who donated money for the goat project. We were able to purchase one goat, four ducks and two chickens. Thanks for your generosity and caring hearts! (Mrs. DaPra)
GEOGRAPHY BEE RESULTS
Congratulations to our school champion and runner-up for the National Geography Bee! Brycen Ulrich is the Cabrillo champion and will move on to take the qualifying test for California. Katherine Rollins was close behind as runner-up. The Bee was a good exhibition of geographic knowledge for all ten finalists. (Mrs. Hofflund)

Congratulations to Sarah Bernard for winning first place in our school for the International Lions Club Peace Poster Contest. The theme this year was the “Power of Peace.” Sarah was awarded a check for $25.00. Great job, Sarah! (Mrs. Willison)

Ten top students have just been notified that they will compete on January 7 to be the National Geography PlaceNameBee PlaceTypeSchool Champion for Cabrillo. In alphabetical order: Peter Carlson, Makani Cartwright, Mason Mulholland, John Rehbein, Katherine Rollins, Nicholas Schwartz, Amelia Shank, Sasha Shapiro and Brycen Ulrich. ACCELERATED READER
Congratulations to the Top Ten readers for Accelerated Reader for the first quarter: Ryan Lin, Mario Solis, Rowan Tanner, Hayley Kong, Paikea Aguilar, Mary Mendoza, Nathan Staples, Daniel Simmons, Teagan Walsh and Madeline Offerman! Seventh graders are ahead in the top ten with 698 points, followed by 6th graders at 390 points. The Top Reader earned 181.6 points 8 weeks, with an average book worth 7 points. Keep it up for the second quarter. (Mrs. Hofflund)
FLAG-FOOTBALL RESULTS
Congratulations to the Legit Ligers, the 2009 Flag-Football Champions. They defeated the McNugget Express 14 - 0 in yesterday's championship game. Team members for the Legit Ligers are Madison Colletto, Alex Hecht, Alex Herbold, Matt Hantke, Kelly Lamagno, Kendall Slaught, Jack Peterson, and Brice Winans. Thanks to everyone who participated. Congratulations to Tanner Pekar-your principal for a day. He turned in a total of 38 orders. He will be in touch with Mrs. Page to set up a day. The money machine will take place this Friday at lunch. Those qualifying will receive a pass, get their lunch and report to the amphitheater.
