PTO PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome Back, Cabrillo Parents:

Cabrillo Middle School is a terrific school with a caring, dedicated staff that works hard to give our students an excellent educational experience. The role of the Cabrillo PTO has been to support their efforts by providing resources that allow the school to offer our students additional opportunities for learning, music, art, sports, technology, and additional classroom supplies for teachers. These are just a few things our students benefit from that need our support.

But these are tough economic times, times that call for straight talk. Cabrillo, like all other schools, faces some tough choices. The simple fact is that school funding was slashed this year by the State. The impact of those cuts is reaching far into our schools and their programs and, ultimately, affecting the opportunities for our students. On the one hand we can accept what is given us and accept a barebones program for our students. We can buy the argument that because times are tough and we can't expect our parents to provide the support they have in the past. Or we can decide that we will not accept being just "O.K"; that we will work even harder for our kids and make sure they have the same advantages Cabrillo students have enjoyed in the past. My father-in-law always reminds me that our students only get one chance through these school years. They can't wait or go back for a better year. Their time is now. Our commitment must be now.

So what do we need to do? There are three ways we can Commit to Cabrillo.

First, Connect! Connect with Cabrillo by becoming a member of the Cabrillo PTO. Your dues help keep our organization going. Attend one of the PTO meetings and a school event. The Cabrillo PTO meets on the second Monday of every month at 7:00 pm in the school’s office conference room.

Second, Volunteer! We need your time. Our school has so many opportunities that enrich our student’s school experience. Many activities can only take place with the support of volunteers.

Third, Participate! We have two major fundraising activities each year: Magazine Sales and the Mariner Fundraiser. Both of these take place in the fall so we may eliminate one in the spring. The revenue we get from these fundraisers pays for the majority of our school-wide projects and programs.

I encourage every Cabrillo family to make a special effort to join and be active in the PTO. Begin by completing the membership form and return it to school. You can also find all the forms on our school website under the CMS PTO link. Come to our first meeting which will take place on Monday, September 14th. We will bend over backwards to make you feel welcome and at home.

Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank Adrienne Stephens for her many years of dedication to our wonderful school we all enjoy today, and her leadership of the Cabrillo PTO for the past two years. It's a hard job and she did it beautifully. She'll be a hard act to follow.

Please join us!
Committing to Cabrillo,
