I expect students to come prepared to class every day. Prepared to me means you have done the work asked of you, you have the necessary supplies (lined paper, planner, blue/black pens and grading pens) and you come ready to participate in a positive way.
I. Beginning of Class
a. Backpacks placed on back of chairs or under desks
b. Check board for instructions
c. Write down assignment(s) in planner (found on side board)
II. Homework/ Planner
a. I will initial planners at parent or student request for those students having trouble remembering to copy assignments.
b. Expect approximately 20- 30 minutes of homework 3-4 nights a week on average. Homework may be finishing work started in class, studying for a test, reading so that you are prepared to participate with class discussions, spelling pack or writing assignments. You will also occasionally be asked to meet for group work.
c. Late work is not accepted… except for:
i. Illness
1. You have the same amount of days to make up work as you were absent
2. Always have a buddy (or two or three) in class you can call to get assignments
ii. Family emergency
1. Bring a note or have parents call/email to explain situation
2. Under normal circumstances you will have one day to make up assignment missed
* All late work should be turned into appropriate tray (above bookshelves), not brought to me.
III. Grading
a. Final grades will be made broken down using the following formula:
i. Tests/quizzes- 40%
ii. Homework- 30%
iii. Class participation/effort/coming to class prepared- 10%
iv. Projects/Reports- 20%
b. Assignments may be graded by either percentages that equate to a letter grade or for a quick grade checks may be used:
i. v+= A; v= C; v-= D
ii. A= 100-90
B= 89-80
C= 79-70
D= 69-60
F= 59 and below
Grades are posted on the door every Monday using the student's ID number. Any time your grade is different than what you think it should be, see me as soon as possible.
IV. Weekly Spelling
a. Spelling pack distributed Monday (or first day of school for the week)
b. Spelling pack turned in Friday (or last day of week)
c. Friday spelling tests (or last day of week)
d. Bonus words worth two extra points each
e. Struggling spellers may be dropped down to fewer words (8,10,12,15) per week with my permission and parent authorization.
V. Writing assignments (essays, reports, poetry books...)
a. I have a "three before me" rule, i.e. three people must read and initial (bottom right corner of the last page of final draft) your essays before they get to me. This means that there should be at least one revision of all papers. The purpose of this procedure is to make the writer find flaws in their writing before turning in, thus leading to higher grades. This is a good thing!
b. Get used to sharing your writing with your classmates; we will be using peer conferencing a lot.
c. All overnight assignments must be done in blue or black ink- no work done in pencil will be accepted.
i. Here is where your options come in: You may hand print, write in cursive or print your paper off the computer. If you choose to use the computer you may use Times New Roman or Arial font (12 pt.) only.
ii. I highly recommend computers because of the spell check tool and the ease of editing when you will be writing more than one draft. Do what works best for you and is most legible. Erasable pens may be a good option for worksheets.
VI. Reading
a. Pass two Accelerated Reader quizzes (within your reading level) per quarter with a score of 70% or better.
b. Complete one book project per quarter (details will be given later)
(As you can tell, this means you will need to read at least two books a quarter. You may read the same book for Accelerated Reader quiz and book project.)
VII. Grade Printouts
a. I can supply grade printouts at any time at parent's request. Please have your child give me as much notice as possible (i.e. do not ask me at 2:45 for a printout).
b. Since new grades are posted every Monday after grades are entered on Friday, Mondays are the best day to get printouts.
VIII. Correcting
a. You will need a grading pen or pencil with you at all times (preferably red, but may be any highly visible color other than blue or black- not a highlighter).
b. You need to take your time and give full attention to the paper you grade.
c. Nobody wants unnecessary marks on their paper; this means no little stars, smiley faces or comments. If an answer is incorrect a line through the number is all that is needed.
d. Most scores will be read out in class so I can put them in the gradebook. If you do not want to share your score just say, "I'll tell you later" when your name is called.
e. Anyone caught cheating (copying, reporting incorrect score, allowing someone to copy, grading an answer as correct that is blank or incorrect…) will receive a zero and possible further consequences with administration.
