Curriculum
Curriculum is defined as a "body of knowledge and skills," not necessarily any particular set of materials. Therefore, you are free to choose from a wide variety of options where books and materials are concerned, so long as they teach the "body of skills and knowledge" required by the Ventura Unified School District and are approved by your Resource Teacher. While the grade level guidelines are available, we hope to accommodate each student's interest, learning styles, abilities and goals.
Families and students are encouraged to choose materials from the Homestead library and attend field trips and other optional programs or classes. Opportunity is available to attend school assemblies presenting visual and performing arts programs.
Homestead school supports and encourages experiential learning. Through the program families are given opportunities to come together and network with other families who have also chosen to pursue educating at home. Voluntary field trips are planned based on student interests. There are also opportunities for group instruction. If a group of students express a need for instruction in math, Homestead teachers will hold classroom math tutorials. Student interests have spurred classes such as art, guitar, creative writing and hands on science labs. If families express a need, the Homestead staff will do their best to find a way to meet it. Homestead school is an exciting home schooling option!
